Rent Climbing Gear: Everything You Need to Know
What is a Grigri?
It is a belay device designed for either indoor or outdoor climbing. Grigri has a braking function that significantly assists in catching a fall. It also makes the belayer’s job much easier when holding or lowering their climbing partner. The Grigri is a versatile belay device and is also highly effective for feeding rope to a lead climber. The belay device can be used for single ropes from 8.5 to 10.5 mm. It is especially appropriate for beginners.
How does Grigri work?
While the climbing belayer slowly moves the rope through a Grigri, a climber moves smoothly upward. A cam inside (plus part of the body) rotates to give a Grigri its holding power.
In case the climber falls, the cam is engaged and pinches the rope to keep it from moving.
How to use the belay device?
Pin Grigri on the harness belay loop:
– Ensure that you thread the climbing rope correctly through the belay device. The illustrations on the Grigri clearly indicate where each rope should go (the climber’s side and the belay-hand side).
– You need to pair the belay device with a locking carabiner and clip it on the belay loop on your climbing harness.
– Double-check with your climbing partner that the rope is loaded correctly.
The primary belaying position:
– The hand you use for a brake should never leave the rope.
– Make sure that the rope is facing away from the rock surface so it won’t make the rope movement difficult.
– While your climbing partner leads the climb, you should feed slack gradually. For top-rope climbing, you must take in the rope as they ascend.
– If your climbing partner falls, lock off the rope by pulling it down and holding it in front of you. In this case, Grigri will hold most of their weight, but your brake hand is an excellent backup in this situation.
Lowering the climber:
– First, lock off the rope in your brake hand.
– Second, slowly open the black handle on the top of Grigri.
– Keep pulling back with your body when you start to feel resistance. Make sure you don’t lift the handle all the way because it could cause a loss of control.
– You can always lock off the handle if the climber loses control.
– Materials: aluminium side plates, stainless steel friction plate, cam, and wear plate, reinforced nylon handle
– Certifications: CE EN 15151-1, UIAA
