What to expect?
Our mountain guide will pick you up in Bled and drive you to the starting point in Bohinj. The guided hiking tour will lead you past beautiful mountain pastures with shepherd’s cottages, among forests with mighty larches and small pines, clearings covered with flowers and the overlook path that offers magnificent views of the Lower Bohinj mountain range. Along the way, you will be surrounded by the scree slopes and peaks of the highest mountains in the Julian Alps.
We start at Planina Blato where we have an easier, one-hour walk to the Hut at the Lake. It is situated in lush green mountain basins, and it offers a beautiful sight of many shepherd’s cottages and cows.
The hiking trail then leads us along the cart track to Ovčarija Mount which lies at an altitude of 1600 metres. From there you can enjoy magnificent views of the surrounding mountains, such as Mala Tičarica, Vogel and Kopica. We will then continue along the Triglav Lakes Valley and discover the remaining six lakes.
On our guided hiking tour around the Triglav Lakes Valley, we will make a stop to have some rest in a Hut at the Triglav lakes, on the southern verge of the valley. There you will have a refreshment with food and drinks. The cottage also offers a variety of traditional Slovenian dishes. After restoring our powers we can set off to the Double Lake in the surroundings. This lake is located at an altitude of 1685 metres. Although there are two lakes separated by a morainal embankment, they are combined into one at high water levels. The colour of the water has a beautiful shade of aquamarine, which, like a magic mirror, reflects the forests and peaks above its surface.
Later, our path will guide us towards the Big Lake, the largest and deepest lake in the valley. From here, the magnificent views open to the surrounding scree slopes and the mountains that rise in the background.
The next is the Green Lake, located under Hribarica pass, near Zasavska mountain cottage. Special algae in the water give it its mysterious green colour. We will continue our way to Brown Lake, which is the highest-lying lake at 2006 m. The speciality of this red-looking lake is the fact that it can dry up during the hot summer months. Another unusual lake, and the last one on our tour, is the Lake under Vršac. This lake remains frozen the most part of the year and there is little vegetation around it, adapted to survive the conditions at this altitude.
After a short break at Zasavska mountain cottage, we will descend back down, through the whole Valley back to the starting point. The guide will drive you back to Bled.
More info about the area
The high mountain Triglav Lakes Valley is one of the most beautiful valleys in the Julian Alps and will fascinate you with its beautiful lakes and their striking colors in the surrounding alpine nature. It is no surprise that the valley was a part of the Alpine Conservation Park, nowadays known as The Triglav Natural Park (in short: the TNP) since its origins in 1924. The TNP covers an area of 840 square kilometres, which presents 4 % of the total surface of Slovenia.
Due to its importance as a reserve of untouched nature and fabulous fauna, it is no surprise that some activities are not allowed in the area. The same restrictions are valid also for the Triglav Lakes Valley, for example, swimming and other recreational activities are prohibited in the lakes. You can only observe them from the shore and enjoy the surrounding beautiful nature.
