A guided gorge climb near Kranjska Gora. Wire bridges, waterfalls, and no experience needed.
Most via ferratas take you up a mountainside. This one takes you up the inside of a gorge.
Hvadnik is a narrow limestone cut above the village of Gozd Martuljek, near Kranjska Gora, with a stream running through the bottom of it and walls closing in overhead. You climb it from the inside, on steel rungs and cable, crossing the water on wire bridges with waterfalls going past underneath you. Two hundred and fifty metres of height over about five hundred metres of gorge, and then you come out at the top with the Julian Alps opening up in front of you.
It is thirty five minutes from Bled and almost nobody knows it is there.
This is what people book it for.
There are several crossings over the Hvadnik stream, and some of them are two-wire and three-wire bridges. One cable for your feet, one or two for your hands, and nothing else. You are clipped in the whole time and they are completely safe, but the first step onto one is a moment.
Below you, there are waterfalls, pools, and polished rock. You will probably get some spray on you. That is part of it.
Graded B/C, which puts it in the middle. There is real vertical ground and some boulder scrambling, but no overhangs and no sections where you are hanging off your arms.
The honest test is fitness rather than nerve. You need to be comfortable being active for around four hours. As one of our guests put it in a review, once you start, the easiest way out is up. There is no bail point halfway, so come on a day you feel good.

Most people on this route have never done a via ferrata before.
Your guide fits your harness, shows you how the lanyard works, and walks you through the first few metres before you are on anything exposed. From there it is a matter of moving one clip at a time, which people get the hang of within about ten minutes.
Minimum age is 8, and children who like climbing tend to do better on this than the adults with them.
Not included: food and drinks, travel insurance, and footwear.
Bring: closed shoes with good grip, ideally hiking boots with ankle support, and long trousers or leggings. The rock is sharp and bare legs come back scraped. We rent boots, jackets and backpacks from our office in Bled if you are travelling light.
After heavy rain the water in the gorge comes up and we will move your date rather than take you into it. You get a free rebooking or a full refund, and we would rather do that than run a route that is not at its best.

Hvadnik is one of four routes we guide. If you want something harder, the Mangart via ferrata and the Hanzova route to Mala Mojstrovka go higher and steeper. If you are bringing younger children or want something gentler, the Triglav Fairytale Route at Mojstrana is the easier option.
