Rent Climbing Gear: Everything You Need to Know
What are the types of climbing ropes?
In general, there are two types of climbing ropes: dynamic and static. Dynamic ropes are stretchy and very efficient by absorbing the impact of a potentially falling climber. Static ropes, on the other hand, are not as flexible. Often, the static climbing rope is used for rope ascents and rescue purposes.
For sport climbing, you’ll need a dynamic rope, and this sector offers three different types to choose from:
– Single rope is most commonly used for sport, alpine, or ice climbing. This rope is very easy to handle, and you can use it with a belay device like Grigri.
– Half rope is usually used for multi-pitch climbing, self-belaying routes, and traditional climbing. Half rope type is used in pairs, therefore it is thinner than other ropes and has to be used in combination with special safety devices.
– Twin rope is a combination of half and single rope. This is a thinner type of rope and requires far more skills than a single rope. Commonly, twin ropes are used in multi-pitch climbing, ice climbing, and mountaineering.
What diameter climbing rope do you need?
It is evident that a thinner rope is lighter to carry; however, it requires more effort and skills to handle it.
– Single ropes range from 9,4 mm to 10 mm and more; the thicker it is, the more common its use. For example, a climbing rope with a diameter of 10 mm or more is typically used for sport climbing and indoor climbing.
– Half and twin climbing ropes typically range from 7 to 9 mm thick, making them suitable for more experienced climbers. Due to their thinner design, they also carry a much lighter weight.
What length of climbing rope should you choose?
As climbing ropes come in different types and diameters, they also come in different lengths. To choose the right length, you need to know the purpose. The lengths of climbing ropes vary between 30 m and 80 m.
So, by choosing the right length, make sure that it is at least twice as long as the chosen climbing route. Longer climbing ropes are usually used for outdoor climbing, while shorter ropes, 30-35 m, are used for indoor climbing.
How to correctly maintain the climbing ropes?
Once you use it, you need to make sure that you clean it as well. Proper storage and care of a climbing rope will ensure its longevity and safe use.
– The ideal place to store it when not in use should be clean, dry, cool, and dark.
– Climbing rope bags are specially made for this purpose.
– Before and after use, make sure that the rope is not knotted.
– You can easily wash it in a washing machine using a gentle cycle at a low temperature. Dry the rope naturally on the floor.
