Rent Climbing Gear: Everything You Need to Know
What is a carabiner?
The carabiner is an important piece of climbing equipment. We use a carabiner as the fastener to attach one piece of equipment to another. Made from aluminium, a carabiner is usually shaped like an oval triangle. All types of carabiners have an opening gate on one side to clip and unclip the other piece of equipment.
Different climbing jobs require different types of carabiners. To use those properly, it is good to understand the differences between different types.
Climbing carabiners by shape:
– Asymmetric D-shape has a larger gate opening than others but has less inside room space. This carabiner is strong and light.
– The pear-shaped climbing carabiner has a large gate for opening, which allows easy clipping of the other parts of the equipment. This one is specially designed for belaying and rappelling.
– The D-shape is designed for all kinds of climbing. It has a smaller gate opening and is a bit heavier than the rest.
– Oval shaped climbing carabiner is the original but not as strong as the other shapes. This climbing carabiner has more gear-holding capacity than the others, though it has a smaller opening gate.
Climbing carabiner by gate types:
– Straight gate carabiner is strong and easy to use. These carabiners are also found on quickdraws.
– Bent gate carabiner is strong and makes clipping easy.
– Wire gate carabiner has a larger gate opening and is appropriate for climbing in cold and wet weather (ice climbing).
– Locking gate carabiner provides extra protection against gate openings. We are using this climbing carabiner for belaying and rappelling.
Climbing carabiners by size, weight, and strength?
– Size: A large carabiner is usually easy to clip (used for belaying and rappelling). A small carabiner is lighter but stiffer to clip (used for other climbing tasks).
– Weight: A lighter carabiner is not always the best choice, as narrower carabiners can cause increased rope wear.
– Strength: We measure the strength of carabiners in kN (101,97 kg), and one carabiner is usually 20 kN strong. That is something that could hold the weight of an adult elephant with correct use, of course. The strength rating is always indicated on the side of the climbing carabiner.
Which climbing carabiner do we use for each climbing task?
– Belaying and rappelling: We need a strong, large pear-shaped carabiner with a locking gate.
– Sports climbing quickdraws: We use an asymmetric D-shaped climbing carabiner with a straight, bent, or wire gate.
– Traditional climbing (trad climbing): We use an asymmetric D-shaped climbing carabiner with a wire gate.
How many carabiners do we need for rock or indoor climbing?
If you go climbing outside on a well-equipped rock climbing crag or indoor climbing spot, you will probably need just one to attach a belaying device or Grigri.
