Imagine the majestic white landscape in the Julian Alps, where all you can hear is snow crunching under your feet. Imagine the feeling of bliss and grace when you stand on the top of the high-altitude mountain, absorbing amazing views. It’s beautiful up there, but it can also be dangerous and slippery if you don’t use crampons. In our office in Bled, you can find all sorts of alpine equipment rental, even the specific mountaineering gear that is essential for your type of hiking.
More information about equipment rental
Types of crampons and their use
– Strap-on crampons: versatile and fit most boots for general hiking
– Hybrid (semi-automatic) crampons: ideal for technical mountaineering with boots that have a heel welt
– Step-in (automatic) crampons: designed for ice climbing and high-altitude expeditions, offering the most secure fit with rigid mountaineering boots
When is it necessary to use crampons?
– Hiking or climbing on icy, snowy, or steep terrain
– In winter conditions and on glaciers, during high-altitude ascents
– On frozen or hard-packed snow trails where regular hiking boots alone wouldn’t provide enough grip
How do you put on crampons?
- Choose the Right Crampons – Ensure they are compatible with your boots (strap-on, hybrid, or step-in)
- Find a Safe Spot – Stand on a stable, flat surface to avoid slipping while putting them on.
- Adjust the Size – If your crampons are adjustable, set them to fit your boots snugly.
- Position the Crampon – Place your boot inside the crampon, making sure the front points are correctly aligned.
- Secure the Straps/Buckles – Fasten the straps or bindings tightly, ensuring a secure fit without restricting circulation.
- Check for Stability – Walk a few steps and adjust if necessary to ensure a firm and comfortable fit.
- Double-Check Before Hiking – Ensure all straps or buckles are properly fastened to prevent them from loosening during your hike.
