The via ferrata lanyard is an important part of the equipment used to cross the iron trails. Mostly, via ferrata routes are very exposed and, therefore, also dangerous. But with caution and using the right equipment, Via Ferrata offers a lot of fun. So besides a climbing harness and a climbing helmet, the via ferrata lanyard is a must-have to conquer Slovenian mountains. At Altitude Activities, we know that packing all the important mountaineering gear is crucial for safety and comfort in the Alps, and that is why we offer you an essential alpine equipment rental.
Helpful information about equipment rental
Why use the Via Ferrata lanyard?
– It prevents falling off the Via Ferrata by connecting your climbing harness to the iron cable.
– The energy absorber reduces a high impact force, in case of a fall.
– The two lanyards give you space to move around while you are constantly attached to the iron cable.
– The two carabiners assist you when you switch from one section of the iron cable to the other.
When to use the Via Ferrata lanyard?
– At the start of the route: attach both carabiners to the cable before beginning the climb.
– During climbing: keep both carabiners attached to the cable at all times. When passing anchor points, always switch one carabiner at a time.
– When crossing suspension bridges or narrow ridges: secure both carabiners to prevent accidental falls.
– Descending a Via Ferrata: keep the lanyard attached to maintain safety.
What should you consider when renting the Via Ferrata lanyard?
– Ensure the Via Ferrata lanyard meets UIAA or EN 958 safety requirements.
– Check for frayed stitching, cuts, or visible damage.
– The energy absorber should be intact and not previously deployed.
– Ensure elastic arms retract properly and are not overstretched.
– Look for auto-locking carabiners that are not damaged or stiff.
– Check if the Via Ferrata lanyard is suitable for your weight range. Most lanyards are designed for users between 40 and 120 kg.
How to use a Via Ferrata lanyard?
– First, tie the attachment loop to the climbing harness.
– Second, you can attach the carabiners to the side loops of your climbing harness when you don’t use the lanyard.
– Before you start climbing, secure both carabiners to the Via Ferrata cable.
– While climbing, switch one carabiner at a time when passing anchor points. Make sure the lanyards don’t twist or tangle.
– Always secure the carabiners from inside out, so the gates face outwards and away from the rock, to prevent accidental opening.
