Whether for rock or ice climbing, a quickdraw is an essential piece of equipment to perform the activity correctly. Extenders, also called quickdraws, connect the rope with the protection while you lead the climb.
Quickdraw is made from two carabiners connected with a semi-rigid material. Each of the two carabiners has its own purpose; one is called a straight-gate carabiner, and one is a bent-gate carabiner. The straight-gate carabiner is used to clip the bolt, while the bent-gate carabiner is designed for clipping the rope.
Before using the quickdraws, you need to know a few basics:
Firstly, how to clip a quickdraw into a bolt hanger?
You can simply do this by pressing the gate against the bolt. Before you clip the bolt, make sure you find a stable stance and secure hold for your other hand.
Secondly, how to clip a rope into a quickdraw?
There are a few techniques about how to clip the rope into a quickdraw. Regardless of the technique you’re using, ensure the rope passes through the carabiner in the direction from the cliff toward the outside.
