What is climbing Carabiner?
The climbing carabiner is an important piece of climbing equipment. We use carabiner d as the fastener to attach together one piece of equipment to another. Made from aluminum this attacher is usually shaped like an oval triangle. All the types of carabiners have an opening gate on one side to clip and unclip the other piece of equipment.
There are different climbing jobs that require different types of carabiners. In order to use those properly, it is good to understand what are the differences between different types
Firstly we divide carabiners by shape, secondly by gate type and last but not least by size, weight, and strength.
What are the carabiner shapes?
–Asymmetric D shape, this climbing carabiner has generally larger gate opening than others but has less inside room space. This carabiner is strong and light.
–Pear shape carabiner has a large gate for the opening which allows easy clipping on the other parts of equipment. This one is specially designed for belaying and rappeling.
–D shape is designed for all kinds of climbing. It has a smaller gate opening and is a bit heavier than the rest
–Oval shaped is the original but not so strong as the other shapes. This climbing carabiner has more gear holding capacity as the others though it has a smaller opening gate.
What is the climbing carabiner the gate type?
There are types of gates and each and every has its own purpose.
-The straight gate carabiner is strong and easy to use. These carabiners are also found on quickdraws
-Bent gate climbing carabiner is strong and makes clipping easy.
-Wiregate carabiner has a larger gate opening and is appropriate for climbing in cold and wet weather (ice climbing)
-Locking gate carabiner provides extra protection against gate opening. We are using this climbing carabiner for belaying and rappeling.
Carabiners by size, weight, and strength?
-Size. The large carabiner is usually easy to clip (used for belaying and rappeling). The smaller carabiner is lighter but harder to clip (used for other climbing tasks).
-Weight. A lighter carabiner is not always the best also narrow carabiner can cause more rope wear.
How strong are carabiners?
We measure the strength of carabiners in kN (101,97 kg) and one carabiner us usually 20 kN strong. That is something that could hold an adult elephant with proper use of course. The straight rating is always written on the side of the climbing carabiner.
Which carabiner do we use for each climbing task?
Belaying and rappeling: For this task, we need a strong large pear shape carabiner with a locking gate.
Sports climbing quickdraws: an asymmetric D shaped that can have straight, bent or wire gate.
for Traditional climbing (trad climbing) we use an Asymmetric D shaped with wire gates
How many carabiners do we need for rock and indoor climbing?
If you go climbing outside on a well-equipped rock climbing crag or indoor climbing place you will probably need just one to attach a belaying device.
