3-Day Hiking Itinerary: Hut to Hut in the Julian Alps
Day 1 – Wild Ridges and WWI Supply Routes
We depart Bled at 5:00 AM and begin our hike from Lake Bohinj, climbing the Komarča wall to reach Črno Jezero (Black Lake), one of the jewels of Seven Lakes Valley Slovenia. After a break, we continue through pine forests and ascend to Lanževica (2,003 m) and Velika Baba (2,016 m), two panoramic peaks on the Lepa Komna plateau.
The day ends with a descent to the Dom pri Krnskih jezerih, a mountain hut near Krn Lake, for dinner and rest.
- Distance: 15.7 km
- Elevation gain: 1,451 m
- Estimated hiking time: 8 hours
Day 2 – Scree Slopes and Silent WWI Monuments
Our early start rewards us with Krn Lake, the highest alpine lake in Slovenia. From here, we ascend Mount Krn (2,244 m), where old trenches, barbed wire, and a WWI cannon remain preserved.
Than we continue to Batognica and Vrh nad Peski, two peaks scarred by history and time. A remote descent leads us to Koča pod Bogatinom for dinner and a peaceful overnight.
- Distance: 17.1 km
- Elevation gain: 1,256 m
- Estimated hiking time: 8 hours
Day 3 – Final Summit and Lake Bohinj Swim
Our last day begins with a scenic walk to the high pasture of Govnjač, where we climb to Mahavšček (2,008 m)—known in Slovene legend as the mountain of the Goldenhorn.
After soaking in the views, we descend via alpine pastures back to Dom na Komni for lunch, before making our final descent to Ukanc at Lake Bohinj. A refreshing dip in the lake closes this unforgettable Julian Alps hut-to-hut hike.
- Distance: 15.8 km
- Elevation gain: 580 m
- Estimated hiking time: 6.5 hours

Important Note: During the high season, mountain huts may be fully booked. In such cases, we will do our best to reserve an alternative hut nearby that allows for a similar trekking route. Please note that we reserve the right to adjust the itinerary based on hut availability.
Walk Through History: WWI Trails in the Julian Alps
The Julian Alps are not only a paradise for hikers—they are also a powerful open-air “museum” of Europe’s past. During the First World War, these remote mountain ridges formed part of the infamous Isonzo Front, where soldiers battled extreme conditions to hold strategic alpine positions. As you hike along high plateaus and mountain passes, you’ll come across original WWI trenches, caverns, bunkers, and even remnants of barbed wire. From the slopes of Mount Krn to the scarred summit of Batognica, every step tells the story of courage, hardship, and the unforgiving nature of war in the high mountains. This hike offers a rare opportunity to connect with Slovenia’s dramatic history while surrounded by breathtaking natural beauty.
This is one of the best ways to hike Slovenia for those who want a multi-day experience across mountain passes, valleys, and pristine trails.
