When you come to Slovenia to search for a winter adventure, you can’t miss the views of our beautiful Julian Alps, all covered in snow. The mountains are calling you and you can’t resist the temptation to climb those steep, white slopes. But for that, you need an ice axe, to stay safe and alive. In our office in Bled, you can find all sorts of alpine equipment rental, even the specific mountaineering gear that is essential for your type of hiking.

Types of ice axes and their use
– Walking ice axe: A long, straight-shafted axe for general mountaineering, providing support and balance on snowy slopes.
– Technical ice axe: Shorter with a curved shaft and aggressive pick, designed for ice climbing and steep, technical ascents.
– Hybrid or Alpine ice axe: A versatile design with a slightly curved shaft, ideal for mixed terrain, combining the features of walking and technical ice axes.
When is it necessary to use an ice axe?
– When traversing steep, icy, or snowy terrain, where extra stability, self-arrest, or cutting steps into ice is required.
– For winter mountaineering, glacier travel, steep snow climbs, and technical alpine routes, helping to prevent slips and aiding in self-rescue if a fall occurs.
– Every time you use crampons.
How do you use an ice axe?
-
Holding the Ice Axe – Grip the axe by the head with the pick facing backward and the shaft pointing downward while walking on snow or ice.
-
Using as a Walking Aid – Plant the spike into the snow for balance and support while ascending or descending steep slopes.
-
Self-Arrest (Stopping a Fall) – If you slip, quickly roll onto your front, dig the pick of the ice axe into the snow, and press your body weight onto it to stop sliding.
-
Cutting Steps – Use the adze (flat end) to carve steps into hard snow or ice for better footing.
-
Anchoring and Belaying – On steep climbs, drive the axe into the snow to create an anchor for securing ropes or providing extra stability.
-
Using in Steep Terrain – On steeper slopes, switch to a dagger grip (holding the shaft with the pick pointing down) for better control and security.
Tip: Always practice self-arrest and proper handling techniques before heading into challenging terrain!
