What is Gri Gri?
It is a belay device designed for either indoor or outdoor climbing. Gri Gri has a braking function that assists significantly with catching a fall. Also, it makes the belayer work much easier while holding or lowering his climbing partner. Grigri is a multipurpose belay device, therefore, is also useful by feeding the rope to a lead climber. The belay device can be used for single ropes from 8.5 to 10.5 mm. It is especially appropriate for beginners.
How do Gri Gri works?
While the climbing belayer slowly moves the rope through GriGri a climber moves smoothly upward. A cam inside (plus part of the body) rotates to give the Grigri its holding power.
In case that the climber falls the cam is engaged and pinches the rope to keep it from moving
How to use the belay device?
Pin Gri Gri on the harness belay loop:
-make sure that you properly tread the climbing rope trought belay device. The images on the Gri Gri will show you exactly which (climbers and belay hand) rope goes where.
-you need to pair the belay device with a locking carabiner and clip it on the belay loop on your harness
-double-check with your climbing partner that the rope is loaded correctly
The primary belaying position:
-the hand you use for the brake should never leave the rope
-make sure that the rope is faced away from the rock surface so it won’t make the rope movement difficult
-while a climbing partner moves up leading the climb, you should feed slack slowly or by toprope climbing take the rope
-if your climbing partner falls lock off with the rope down and in front of you. In this case, Gri Gri will hold the most of his weight, but your break hand is a great backup in this situation.
Lowering the climber:
-first, lock off the rope in your break hand
-second, slowly open the black handle on the top of Gri Gri
-keep pulling back with your body when you start to feel resistance. Make sure you don’t lift the handle all the way because it could cause, lose of control
-you can always lock off the handle if the climber loses the control
