Each region offers countless tracks and top destinations where you can cycle through the forest macadam cart track, ascend to the top of plateaus with breathtaking views or wind up narrow and steep forest paths. All you need for an unforgettable adventure is a proper bike that will help you to overcome even the most challenging terrain.
Most beautiful mountain bike trails wind from the Slovenian coast, across the Karst region to the diverse landscape in central and northeast Slovenia. For enthusiasts of real challenges, it is a paradise in the hilly part of the country, beneath the slopes of plateaus and mountains in the northwest region. Here, cycling is a pleasure on tracks through the alpine valleys with views of the highest peaks of the Julian Alps. Below we have prepared some ideas for the most exciting biking tours in Slovenia.
1. Vremščica with a view to the sea
The mountain bike trail to the top of Vremščica starts near the world-famous Skocjan Caves, from where you take the path along the karstic Reka River. In this part, you will get wonderful views of the largest underground canyon. Here the views also open to the hamlets, located above the cliffs. In the background, you can already see the gently sloping path to Vremščica.
Gradual MTB routes will lead you across meadows and hiking paths to the summit of Vremščica. The last ascent is somewhat steeper. On the top, you will have beautiful views of the Slovenian coast with the Adriatic Sea.
This tour is not technically demanding, so it is also suitable for beginners. The descent is a bit more technically demanding in the section below the railway at Famlje village. If you are in good shape and can control the bike, you can also go down the track to the lower part of the canyon.
2. Zasavska Sveta gora across the Sava River
Zasavska Sveta gora or the Zasavje Holy mountain, together with Church of Mary’s Birth, is one of the most visited viewing points in central Slovenia. It lies on a ridge that slopes downwards to the Sava River valley and into the narrow Kandršica valley. Due to the diverse terrain with many sights of cultural heritage, this is one of the most impressive mountain bike trails in Slovenia.
MTB routes will lead you on the macadam, asphalt and forest tracks. The biking tour lasts 1.5 hours when you will make 17 kilometers. The trip is suitable for cyclists in their best fitness, as there are plentiful steep ascents. Start your journey in the town of Litija and continue across the Sava River to the Panovič Castle. Then cycle across the valley of the brook Vidrnica, from where the path starts to rise steeply to the Castle Ljubek. At Vače, turn for Klenik onto a cart track that slopes to the top of Zasavska Gora.
4. Mt. Matajur above the Soča River Valley

6. From Lake Podpeč to Krim
Lake Podpeč in central Slovenia near Ljubljana represents an excellent starting point for MTB routes to the summit of Mt. Krim with an altitude of 1107 meters. The biking tour takes 3 to 4 hours while making 30 kilometers and ascending 1000 meters on macadam and cart tracks in the woodlands. The trip starts at Lake Podpeč, from where you cycle towards the vast forest on the south side of the hill.
When the road at the end widens, continue cycling on the left side to the sign for Tomišelj, where you turn right. From here follow a moderately long mountain bike trail with alternating ascends and descends along the eastern side of Krim.
Then cycle on a wider macadam path towards Iška vas and Rakitna. After a few kilometers turn right at a Krim sign. The gently sloping path will lead you below the summit with a short but steep slope. At the top of the Krim, you can make a stop in a cottage that offers food and drinks.
7. Pohorje plateau with a trip around Rogla
A Pohorje plateau near Zreče offers many MTB routes, such as the circular Rogla ski resort route. The biking tour on macadam and forest paths takes about 4 hours and 47 kilometers. The tour is suitable for recreational and experienced cyclists who would like to spend a pleasant day in the forests of Pohorje and combine outdoor activity with the sightseeing tour and eat delicious food in the cottages. The Rogla circular mountain bike trail runs within the following points:
- Start at the top of Mt. Rogla with a descent through Bike Park Rogla to the Na Pesku cottage
- Cabin on Klopni vrh with the most beautiful views of Maribor city
- Šumik hut with the Veliki and Mali Šumik waterfall
- Osankarica cabin; here is also a stunning Black Lake
- The biking tour continues on the right side of the track, where you will soon reach the Na Pesku cabin. After an undemanding ascent, you will reach the top of Rogla ski resort.
8. Active MTB routes on Pokljuka plateau

The best thing ever. I took my old boss to experience Slovenia in one day. And boy I am happy I chose Altitude Activities to do so.
