A Mountain in Full Bloom

When May rolls around in Slovenia, locals and nature lovers alike start dreaming of one thing: blooming alpine meadows, green pastures, and fragrant forests waking up from their winter sleep. While the Julian Alps are often still snow-covered, spring comes early to the Karavanke Mountains — a long and scenic range stretching along the Austrian border.

Thanks to their sunny southern slopes, the snow melts quickly, revealing vibrant landscapes full of colour and life. And there’s one mountain in particular that steals the show every May: Golica.

Bled Hikes: From Bled to Mount Golica in May

Before we head off on this unforgettable mountain adventure, here are a few key details to get you ready for the trail:

  • Pick-up in Bled – drive to Jesenice – we’ll start our journey with a scenic transfer to the base of the mountain
  • Starting point: Planina pod Golico – a charming alpine meadow to kick things off
  • Elevation gain: 855 m – your legs will feel it, but the views are totally worth it
  • Mount Golica altitude: 1835 m – you’ll be standing tall among the clouds
  • Estimated time of ascent: Around 3 hours – with plenty of time to soak in the scenery
  • Estimated time of descent: About 2 hours – downhill joy!
  • Difficulty: A moderate hike – no ropes or climbing needed, just a decent fitness level and a sense of adventure

Heads up: Not the best choice for those with vertigo, as we’ll be walking along a scenic ridge most of the way

Why is Golica so Special in May?

The name “Golica” loosely means “the bare one,” and it fits perfectly. This smooth, grassy mountain rises steeply without forest cover, giving it an open, panoramic feel. As part of a beloved Slovenian mountain hiking trail, its slopes transform around mid-May into a sea of white daffodils (Narcissus poeticus), creating one of the most breathtaking natural displays in Slovenia.

Hiking through these blooming meadows feels like walking on soft white feathers — sometimes even like a dusting of snow on bright green grass. But be quick! The blooming season is short. By early June, the daffodils start to fade.

A Scouting Hike: What to Expect on the Trail

At the beginning of May, I headed out on a scouting hike to see if the trail was ready for the season. This is one of those Bled hikes that truly delivers — close enough to see Lake Bled from a bird’s perspective, yet wild enough to feel like a proper mountain escape.

  • The forested start was gentle and peaceful, with birds chirping and fresh spring scents filling the air.
  • After about an hour, I emerged onto the open ridge where the real adventure begins.
  • The ascent to Mala Golica suddenly ramps up — a steep, grassy climb that might take your breath away (in more ways than one). With a slow and steady pace, the climb is completely manageable — and when the daffodils are in bloom, it’s 100% worth the effort.
  • From the first peak, the trail levels out slightly, offering a welcome break and stunning views.
  • Traversing the wide, green slopes of Golica, I spotted Koča na Golici, a cozy mountain hut and the perfect future lunch stop.
  • Passing just below Krvavka, a pointy yet grassy peak, I paused to admire the next ascent to the main summit. Although it looked steep, a steady rhythm made the final stretch go by quickly.

After about three hours, I stood on top of Golica, soaking in jaw-dropping views over the Julian Alps, the Karavanke ridge, and across the border into Austria.

Food, Forests & a Refreshing Finish

The wind was howling at the top, so I didn’t linger long. I descended to Koča na Golici, where a warm welcome and a menu full of delicious Slovenian dishes awaited. Think: rich jota, hearty ričet, sausages with sauerkraut and buckwheat žganci, and decadent apple strudel.

This time, I tried something new — a buckwheat pudding with forest berry jam. A sweet surprise that absolutely hit the spot.

After an hour of relaxing, chatting with fellow hikers, and enjoying the views, I chose a different path down to make a circular route. The Slovenian mountain hiking trail took me through a lush, fairytale-like forest, and I even stopped by a sparkling brook and waterfall to cool my feet in a crystal-clear pool.

Is the Golica Hike for You?

So, to wrap it up — if you’re around in May, this hike is an absolute must! Why? Well…

  • You’ll get your dose of moderate exercise while wandering through meadows that smell like spring itself.
  • You’ll feel like a local as you hike a real Slovenian trail and maybe even share a smile or a chat with friendly hikers along the way.
  • You’ll have so many chances to strike a pose — perfect for Instagram or even a pro-level photoshoot.
  • You can hop through daffodils, flop onto the grass, and soak in those epic panoramic views like you’re in a fairytale.
  • You’ll win major points with your family or friends by surprising them with a sporty-but-fun day out.
  • You’ll stand in two countries at once — how’s that for a bucket list item?
  • You’ll taste traditional Slovenian food at a cozy mountain hut (yes, it’s as delicious as it sounds).
  • And if you’re the kind of adventurer ticking off every Slovenian mountain hiking trail during your holiday — this one should be at the top of your list!

The best thing ever. I took my old boss to experience Slovenia in one day. And boy I am happy I chose Altitude Activities to do so. Our tour guide Jerry was awesome, funny and you could just see he knows what he is doing. We went to the canyon of Jermanka and even though there is a drop almost 45m high we felt extremely safe. Overall highly suggest going canyoning with Altitude Activities
