Lake Bled to Bohinj by car

If you’re planning a trip by car, the drive from Bled to Bohinj is about 30 kilometres and typically takes around 30 minutes. The route is simple and mostly straightforward—no turns are needed until the final stretch—making it easy to navigate. During the summer season, however, this road can get quite busy, as it’s the only direct connection between the two towns.

From Bled, follow the road towards Bohinjska Bela. As you drive, the scenic Sava Bohinjka River will accompany you along the way. Continue through the quiet villages of Obrne and Nomenj before reaching the larger town of  Bohinjska Bistrica. At the roundabout there, take the right exit and drive straight again, passing a few more villages until you arrive in the Lake Bohinj area.

  • The first and most visited village you’ll reach is Ribčev Laz, known for its iconic church by the bridge and the Goldenhorn statue. This is the perfect stop if you want to rent a boat or stand-up paddle board. You can also go swimming—either under the bridge or across it and to the left.
  • Driving through the bridge further along, you’ll find Stara Fužina, a charming traditional village slightly inland. It’s a great place for a peaceful walk along the Mostnica River or to start a 2-hour hike through the stunning Mostnica Gorge.
  • From Ribčev Laz continue driving to Ukanc, a tranquil village at the far west end of the lake. It’s the best spot for swimming, surrounded by towering mountains and alpine scenery. From Ukanc, you can also extend your adventure with a visit to the picturesque Savica waterfall.

Rent a car in Bled

Renting a car is an excellent option if you don’t have your own vehicle but want the freedom to explore the Bohinj Valley at your own pace. You can rent a car from the Europcar office, conveniently located in the Bled city center at Ljubljanska cesta 7. The branch is open daily, and bookings can be made easily through their official website, where you’ll also find a full list of prices and vehicle options.

The best thing ever. I took my old boss to experience Slovenia in one day. And boy I am happy I chose Altitude Activities to do so. Our tour guide Jerry was awesome, funny and you could just see he knows what he is doing. We went to the canyon of Jermanka and even though there is a drop almost 45m high we felt extremely safe. Overall highly suggest going canyoning with Altitude Activities
