Planning to conquer Triglav, the highest mountain in Slovenia at 2,864 metres? You’re in the right place. This in-depth guide reveals the most popular Triglav trails, insider tips, and everything you need to know before your Triglav climb.

More than just a peak, Mount Triglav is the heart and soul of Slovenia. It stands as a national symbol, even featured on our coat of arms. In ancient Slavic mythology, Triglav was considered a sacred mountain – a powerful god with three heads, watching over the skies, the land, and the underworld.

Whether you’re a seasoned mountaineer or a passionate hiker ready for your first summit, this guide is designed to help you choose the best Triglav hiking route and make your ascent safe, scenic, and unforgettable.

Triglav, Slovenia’s highest peak and national symbol, rises above the Gorenjska region like the Slavic god it’s named after, watching over alpine plateaus, rivers, and valleys. Nestled in the heart of the Julian Alps and visible from afar, Triglav attracts thousands of hikers each summer. At its summit stands the iconic Aljaž Tower, welcoming over 3,000 visitors daily during the season. Whether you’re planning a Triglav hike just to one of the huts or a full Triglav climb, this legendary mountain offers an unforgettable adventure.

Triglav may be the most iconic and popular peak in Slovenia, but don’t let its popularity fool you — this Alpine giant demands respect. Every season, hikers wearing inappropriate shoes end up needing rescue, reminding us that proper gear and a reliable weather forecast are essential for a safe and rewarding Triglav climb.

If you’re planning to hike the legendary three-headed mountain god, be prepared. To help you get started, we’ve created a new Self-Guided Triglav Hiking Guide, featuring all 21 main Triglav trails leading to the summit:

From Pokljuka Plateau to Mount Triglav

This lush, forest-covered plateau is a beloved starting point for hikes to many of the surrounding peaks, not just Triglav. Nestled in the heart of Triglav National Park, it offers an unforgettable experience for nature lovers — whether you’re setting off on a mountain adventure or simply exploring the plateau on foot or by car.

Pokljuka is alive year-round — home to wildlife like the brown bear and rare alpine flowers such as the iconic fluffy Edelweiss. In winter, it transforms into a sporting stage as it hosts the Biathlon World Cup. Thanks to its close proximity to both Lake Bohinj and Lake Bled, Pokljuka is one of the most sought-after destinations in the Gorenjska region.

This high alpine plateau boasts some of Slovenia’s most picturesque mountain pastures, including Zajavornik, Lipanca, Uskovnica, and Zajamniki. Dotted with traditional wooden huts, the landscape offers a glimpse into the rich cultural heritage of Gorenjska’s mountain life — a tradition still cherished today.

But let’s get to what you’re really here for — the best hiking trails from Pokljuka that lead to Mount Triglav.

Stay with us and read the following path descriptions!

1) Rudno polje – Mount Triglav (across Planika and Triglavska škrbina)

Altitude difference: 1517 m

Estimated hiking time: 5h 25min
Distance of path:  13.1 km

Access to the starting point:

You can access this path coming from Ljubljana – Jesenice highway and exiting for Lesce. You follow the main road to Bled and the road signs for Pokljuka, leading through Gorje, passing the Zatrnik ski slope, and to Rudno polje on Pokljuka in Triglav National Park, where you park in a big parking area.

Route description:

On the opposite side of the parking area, find red sign posts in direction for Triglav. Route starts with an easy hike into the forest, pass the military facilities (Vojašnica). At the trail junction, go left for Triglav, and then steep into the forest, following the typical marks – white dots with red circle. Soon, you reach the mountain pasture of Konjščica, with a sheperd cottage in the middle.

From there, you will continue up and across the meadow to the other side of the mountain pasture. First, reaching a steep slope that soon connects to the Rudno polje route. To reach the Jezerce plain, you must go up the torrent and then turn to the left, ascending along the stream towards Studor pass. It crosses another torrent riverbed and goes past the dwarf pines and meadows, diagonally rising the mountain pass with a wonderful panoramic view of Bohinj Valley.

Traversing the mountain slopes:

Traverse the mountain slopes of Veliki Draški vrh and Tosc. You should reach a meadowy southern slope of Tosc where the two routes from Uskovnica and Tosc meet. The route continues straight and slightly downwards along a scarce forest to another steep slope. It turns into a man-made mountain shelf of the Tosc’s precipice. Wide enough not to cause any trouble but make sure to wear a helmet there since there is a risk of rocks falling. The path will soon rise again and lead to an intersection where it turns in Vodnik Lodge‘s direction.

From Vodnik Lodge:

It continues straight and gradually steepens along the slopes under Vernar. After that, you will reach the first steel cable leading across a steep ledge, crossing the scree slope. Ascending to the top of a rock step, followed by the wide slopes of the Konjsko saddle. Continue to the left in the direction of the Planika hut. On the right side, you can go to Krma, and if you go straight, you should reach Kredarica. The path goes up across the mountain scree in a zigzag pattern and, when it reaches a side ridge, then turns right, leading forward until it reaches the Planika hut.

From Planika hut:

After the hut, follow the path to Triglav across the Triglavska škrbina. It’s flat at first and goes along the Triglavski Kot. There you might see some snow through most of the year. On the other side, another mountain scree will lead you to the start of the climbing part of the route. It will be very steep at the beginning and marked with climbing wedges and steel cables. The route is well-secured, but you must still be careful and use the climbing equipment. The last meters below the Triglavska škrbina are not as steep. Then the path merges with the routes from Dolič and Plemenice, continuing to ascend upwards. Soon there will be less climb and only a few minutes to Mount Triglav peak.

2) Rudno polje – Mount Triglav (across Planika and Mali Triglav)

Altitude difference: 1517 m

Estimated hiking time: 6 h 20 min
Distance of path: 13.7 km

Access to the starting point:

Exit the Ljubljana – Jesenice at Lesce and go past Bled towards Pokljuka. Through Gorje, you will soon reach the upper parts of Pokljuka and Rudno polje, where you park in a big parking area.

Soon, you reach the mountain pasture of Konjščica, with a sheperd’s cottage in the middle.

Na Jezercu area:

The walk across the not-so-steep area escalates into the riverbed of a torrent, going higher and higher. You will cross to the right side of the torrent eventually and soon reach the Studor preval pass. It offers a magnificent view of the Bohinj side, leading straight on. After a gradual descent to the right, the slopes of Veliki Drški vrh and later Tosc will begin. Two paths will merge with the one you are on, and you will proceed to walk the path that goes straight, soon finding the screes that lead to the Vodnik hut.

From Vodnik hut:

Once you arrive at the hut, continue across the man-made rock shelf mentioned before and turn left after a slight descent and you will get a nice view of Triglav mountain. From the Vodnik hut, go in the direction of Bohinjska vratca. Cross the slopes of Venar and the first steel cable will appear, followed by the scree and the ridge of Mt Triglav, leading you to Konjsko sedlo slopes. Go toward Planika hut and to the west of this area. In about 15 minutes, you will arrive at the Planika mountain hut. The route then crosses a rocky area and a mountain shelf, which turns to the right and shortly reaches the climbing part with steel cables.

Mali Triglav area:

Go across the steep but secured ridge of Mali Triglav and up to its top. Cross a narrow mountain ridge between the two peaks and continue climbing up the ridge to Mount Triglav.

3) Rudno polje – Mount Triglav (across Kredarica)

Altitude difference: 1517 m

Estimated hiking time: 6 h 30 min
Distance of path: 13.5 km

Access to the starting point:

You can start this Triglav tour coming from the Ljubljana – Jesenice highway and exiting for Lesce. You follow the main road to Bled and the road signs for Pokljuka, leading through Gorje, passing the Zatrnik ski slope, and to Rudno polje on Pokljuka, where you park in a big parking area.

Route description:

Follow the same path as for Rudno polje – Mount Triglav (across Planika): the route described for the way to the Konjsko saddle.

From there on, the road becomes different as you go straight toward Kredarica. The path will lead you to the next intersection, where you continue left (Stanič hut on the right).  The trail will become steep and bypass smaller ravines.

The trail will turn slightly more difficult and become secured, continuing to an intersection turning in the direction of Kredarica (Planika on the left). After a steep climb, you will reach the Kredarica hut and then carry on towards the Triglav glacier, lowering and ascending to the start of the climbing trail across Mali Triglav to Mt Triglav peak.

4) Uskovnica (Lom) – Mount Triglav (across Triglavska škrbina)

Altitude difference: 1788 m

Estimated hiking time: 6 h 20 min
Distance of path: 14.3 km

Access to the starting point:

Exit Ljubljana – Jesenice highway at Lesce and then drive in the Bled direction and further to Bohinjska Bistrica. Just before Bohinjska Bistrica, take a right turn at Bitnje village up to Pokljuka. The road will arrive at the Upper Bohinj Valley, where you will continue to the left at the crossroads in the direction of Srednja vas. You will be able to notice the road signs for Uskovnica, leading you right on the road and guiding you to the parking spot ‘’Lom’’.>

Route description:

Start hiking in the direction of the Uskovnica hut. The route goes through the forest, bypassing the Ulčnek cheese factory and crossing the pasture meadows, ultimately to their edge. You will reach a marked path called ‘’Za Ribnico’’ – path to Za Ribnica, where the path goes forward and past the huts to the water trough and the signpost for Uskovnica hut.

Continue toward Tosc, Draški vrh, Viševnik, Vodnik lodge, Rudno polje, and Praprotnica across the pasture fence and onto a macadam road, which will proceed across ravined meadows to another pasture fence and an intersection by the chapel on Uskovnica. Take a left there and follow the flattened road across the pasture meadows.

From Uskovnica:

The trail is similar to other routes from Uskovnica to the top of the Triglav mountain. You should go higher up to the mountain pasture of Spodnji Tosc and then reach an intersection, taking a right turn on the marked path going through a scarce forest along the cart track towards the Vodnik lodge. This route becomes the same as the one from Uskovnica (Razpotje) to Triglav (Triglavska škrbina), so the road will first guide you to the slopes below Venar, then the area near the Konjski preval pass and to the Planika lodge.

After, you will continue to ascend to the Planika lodge, and this route will guide you in the direction of Triglavska škrbina. The trail crosses Triglavski kot and the gravel screes to the starting point of the secured climbing trail. You should then soon reach the top of Mt Triglav.

5) Rudno polje – Mount Triglav (across Kugy’s ledges)

Altitude difference: 1517 m

Estimated hiking time: 7 h 30 min
Distance of path:  12km

Access to the starting point:

Exit the Ljubljana – Jesenice at Lesce and go past Bled, towards Pokljuka. Through Gorje, you will soon reach the upper parts of Pokljuka and Rudno polje. Continue to the parking spot at the end.

Route description:

Follow the cart track uphill in the Konjščica direction. The road will turn into a hiking trail after a while and ascend along the Ribnica stream, followed by a waterfall visible from the path going across the pasture area of Konjščica to the cheese factory.

You continue in the same direction as for the route Uskovnica (Lom) – Triglav (Triglavska škrbina) that we mentioned earlier. Just walk from Konjščica to the Jezerce plain, reaching the inner area of Triglav national park, continuing across the torrent riverbed. Follow the route upward diagonally to the Studor Preval pass, where the view to the Bohinj side will unveil. Cross the slopes of Veliki Draški vrh and Tosc, then continue straight when the route from Uskovnica joins in. Instead of going to the left for Tosc peak, keep going straight along its slopes to the Vodnik lodge

From Vodnik lodge:

From there, the route straightens toward Triglav and starts ascending under the slopes of Vernar, soon secured by a steel cable across a short mountain shelf. Continue up the scree and a rock jump, further to the steps following after. Soon you will reach the terrain near Konjski preval pass and arrive there after a short descent. Head straight to Kredarica, past the intersection, where you turn left, with Stanič lodge on the right. The trail will get steeper here and merge with the route from Krma valley, soon followed by another intersection, guiding us to the right in the Kredarica direction. When you reach Kredarica, continue towards Mt Triglav peak and take a right turn right after the signpost in the north direction. The rocks will be marked here due to the many abysses’.

The trail will lead us up the scree, and the red line marks will safely guide us to Kugy’s ledge (Kugy’s shelf). The shelf is quite short and not very difficult but still requires carefulness since the terrain is leading us directly above the precipice of the northern wall. The trail is secured with steel cables in some parts, where the risk of a slip is the highest.

From Kugy’s ledge, we enter the western Triglav plateau and take a left turn, merging with the route from Plemenice and later on the track from Dolič as well.  We climb upward the scree and the climbing part of the route, crossing an intersection, and continue upward to the left to arrive on the Mount Triglav peak.

From Krma Valley to Mount Triglav

This scenic valley, blanketed with forests and flower-filled meadows, is one of three key gateways to Slovenia’s highest peak — alongside Kot and Vrata, the Krma Valley offers a stunning approach to Triglav mountain.

In fact, this starting point offers the easiest of all Mount Triglav trails. The 7-kilometre-long valley bursts with wildflowers during the warmer months, adding a touch of magic to the already stunning mountain views. It also connects to another key starting point — the Radovna Valley, a glacial valley near Mojstrana and the longest of the three main Triglav access routes. From here, you can explore numerous surrounding peaks, including Debela peč, Debeli vrh, Macesnovec, Tosc, Rjavina, and more. This route is also considered the safest option for a winter Triglav climb.

If this is your selected starting point, we invite you to read on and choose among the range of different paths starting in Krma Valley.

You can continue your path on foot on a macadam road, where after a while, the path will reveal a hunting trail that leads up a steep slope secured with a steel cable. It enters the woods and turns to the right on a cart track, following the road up the hill. There are a lot of pathways leading nowhere from this point. You need to proceed up the slightly wider and partially marked intersection, and you will soon see a sign for Grintovica on one of the trees.

From Cart Track:

Leave the cart track and follow the path to the right, which becomes steeper, then gradually goes downward. Follow the signs for Grintovica guiding you into the forest on the right. The track disappears there, but you must proceed in the same direction, reaching several fallen trees and crossing the marked path from the Voje valley to the Krstenica mountain pasture. After you arrive at the hut, keep walking through another forest terrain to the upper part.

After hut:

After reaching the abandoned huts, turn to the wide trail leading into the forest of Spodnja Grintovica, gradually descending. Join the route coming from the Voje valley there, going to the left. This time, the path reaches another intersection with the route from Pokljuka, where you continue to the Vodnik lodge.

Planika hut:

Continue below Vernar across the first steel cable and gravel scree. You will reach Konjsko sedlo preval pass. Proceed as the other paths mentioned above to the Planika from here, up the ridge, and to the Planika hut. From there on, follow the route right around the cabin and onto the rocky terrain after crossing the shelf and ravines into the climbing trail below Triglav mountain. Route description from Blato parking lot:

Starting from the Blato parking lot, you must go 10 minutes back the path and go on the left cart track when reaching the first intersection. You want to reach the mountain pasture at Jezero. You can ascend through the Pungart valley and across an abandoned pasture fence. The path will merge with the trail from the Vodični vrh mountain pasture, continuing straight to the Jezero hut. Proceed to the left until you reach an intersection with the trail to Viševnik and Pršivec, following in the direction of Dedno Polje.

Dedno Polje:

The path will become more difficult with time, going uphill through a scarce pine tree forest and branching off across Krištofojca that leads to Viševnik. However, you will take the wide trail going higher and then turning to the right until it becomes flatter, soon reaching the Dedno polje mountain pasture. Bypass Dedno polje until you arrive at an intersection and leave the path that leads to the Triglav lakes mountain hut.

Go in the direction of Vratca pass, Hribarice, and Prehodavci. Descending past the pasture huts, then go uphill to another intersection going up instead of down to Laz. The path will become steep and go through the conifer tree forest, making it up to a focal part of Za Kopico after about half an hour.

The after Za Kopico:

The path then rises to the southern slopes of Slatna and Prvi Vogel. Gradually turning to the Vrata saddle and merging with the route from Štapce pass. Continue downward across the slopes of Vršaki and cross a short mountain shelf, reaching an intersection that merges this route with the path from the Triglav lakes, going further across Hribarice, straight to Čez Hribarice saddle and further down to the Dolič saddle. Rising again after an hour or so, the path will find you at another intersection, the route leading you to the left towards the Tržaška hut after a short five-minute descent.

Tržaška hut:

From there, follow the route to the right and the west up the mule track for half an hour. You will see Triglav in front of you. Head to Triglav across the difficult terrain, be careful of our steps, and reach the path from Plemenice. Then, the route takes you across the scree to the secured climbing wall and below the Triglavska škrbina. Continue upward to the top to reach the peak of Triglav mountain.

5) Srednja vas – Mount Triglav (behind Ribnica and across Triglavska škrbina)

Altitude difference:  2281 m

Estimated hiking time: 8 h 45 min
Distance of path: 17.3 km

Access to the starting point:

Exit Ljubljana – Jesenice highway at Lesce and then drive in the Bled direction and further to Bohinjska Bistrica. Just before Bohinjska Bistrica, take a right turn at Bitnje village up to Pokljuka. The road will arrive at the Upper Bohinj valley, where you will continue to the left at the crossroads in the direction of Srednja vas. Find St. Martin’s church on the right and park in front of it and the Primary school.

Route description:

Start at the Primary school and go in the direction of the Kres vantage point and continue on the cart track through the forest. Exit the forest with Rudnica and a part of Upper Bohinj valley. Keep walking forward on the cart track, soon reaching a steepening road that leads to Uskovnica across Kres, where the view over Srednja vas, Bohinj valley, and the lower Bohinj mountains opens up. Proceed on the road and turn to the right once you reach the cart track markings leading through a forest along with the dwarf pines and bushes steeper into the woods. The path concludes when arriving at macadam road. Leave the road and ascend the hiking trail to Uskovnica. You will come to an intersection and need to continue on the path on the left, as the markings will signalize.

Uskovnica:

The path will shortly branch off, leading to Uskovnica across Lom, as the route you are on goes to the right and up the steep slopes of the part called Za Ribnico. This is not the same as the Ribnica creek. Follow the newer cart track to the right and cross the slopes in the same direction, soon to find yourself at another intersection, continuing on the upper left path toward Uskovnica.

Tosc southern slopes:

As the path arrives at a macadam road, following it to the right and later merging with the routes from Stara Fužina, Srednja vas across Lom, and the parking lot in Lom. After finding the huts on Uskovnica, proceed to the Uskovnica hut and then go in the direction of Draški vrh, Viševnik, Vodnik lodge, and Rudno polje, across the pasture fence leading to the chapel on Uskovnica. Follow the path to Vodnik Lodge, from crossing the first steep ravine, plains, and the torrent riverbed. The path continues across Spodnji Tosc mountain pasture, leading up the dwarf pines and meadowy plains to merge with the route from Pokljuka. Go across the southern slopes of Tosc above its precipices and follow the way to Vodnik Lodge

From Vodnik hut:

From there, walk the slopes below Vernar, soon reaching the steel cables guarding your safety on the ascending route that crosses a short shelf and a rock jump. The trail arrives near Konjski preval and rises to the Planika mountain hut. Go left toward the hut and up the gravel scree to the ridge, then turn to the right side around a karst hole and proceed to the Planika mountain hut.

To climb up to the peak of Triglav mountain, you need to go across the Triglavska škrbina and Triglavski kot. Then follow the path on the scree and to the starting point of the climbing trail. The path will intersect with the route from Dolič and Plemenice, steepening to the hillside of Mt Triglav, soon to arrive at its top.

6) Savica hut – Mount Triglav (across 7 Triglav Lakes Valley)

Altitude difference: 2211 m

Estimated hiking time: 8h 45min
Distance of path: 18 km

Access to the starting point:

From highway Ljubljana – Jesenice go to the exit Lesce and follow the road towards Bled and forward towards Bohinjska Bistrica. Continue driving towards the lake Bohinj (Ribčev laz), where we come to a crossroad, where we continue straight on the left (south) side of the lake in the direction of Ukanc and waterfall Savica. This more and more narrow road, we then follow to a large parking lot at the mountain hut Savica. The parking lot is payable.

Short description:

From the parking lot, the trail leads toward Črno jezero and Koča pri Triglavskih jezerih. After crossing the Savica river, the path to Komarča turns left and begins a steep ascent. This section features steel cables for safety, as the terrain is exposed and rocky.

From Black Lake to Double Lakes:

As the trail climbs Komarča, views of Bohinj open up. After overcoming a short technical section, the path reaches the top of Komarča, then gently descends to the Black Lake. From the lake, the trail continues past a junction and follows the Lopučniška valley, gradually ascending toward Double Lakes with the first mountain hut on the way – Triglav Lakes Hut.

Hiking through the 7 Lakes Valley:

Beyond the hut, the trail heads through the 7 Triglav Lakes Valley, passing the big Kidney Lake and the Green Lake. It climbs scree slopes toward Hribarice, crossing two junctions before descending toward the Dolič saddle and the next mountain hut, Dolič Hut.

The final ascent:

From Dolič Hut, the route climbs toward Triglav on a steep mule track. The path flattens before reaching the final scree slope below the summit. After a difficult secured section past Triglavska škrbina, a final short climb leads to the summit of Triglav.

From Vrata Valley to Mount Triglav

Nestled near the more spacious Krma Valley, the Vrata Valley offers a wilder and more dramatic approach to Mount Triglav. This 10-kilometre-long glacial valley is narrower and more rugged, known for its slightly more demanding Triglav hiking trails that lead directly to the base of Triglav’s legendary North Face — the highest vertical wall in the Eastern Alps.

The journey into Vrata begins with a visit to the breathtaking Peričnik Waterfall, Slovenia’s highest, plunging 52 metres over a rocky cliff. A special highlight? You can walk behind the curtain of water for a unique and refreshing experience. But you don’t need to be a mountaineer to enjoy Vrata. The valley itself is a natural gem, perfect for a peaceful walk surrounded by streams, towering peaks, and the dramatic overhanging rock formations known as The Galleries.

From Vrata, the adventure doesn’t end with Triglav. The valley is also a starting point for other spectacular hikes, including Škrlatica, Stenar, and the high alpine plateau of Kriški podi — making it a must-visit destination for serious hikers and casual explorers alike.

If this is your starting point, you will get all the information below. Keep reading!

1) Aljaž Lodge in Vrata Valley – Mount Triglav (Tominškova trail)

Altitude difference: 1849 m

Estimated hiking time: 5 h
Distance of path: 6.4 km

Access to the starting point:

Leave the Gorenjska highway at Hrušica and follow the main road to Kranjska Gora, then before Dovje, turn to Mojstrana. Take the road to the Vrata Valley and reach the parking lot near Aljažev dom, where this Triglav tour begins.

Route description from Vrata Valley:

Start on the macadam road that reaches the crossroads at Aljaž lodge, and then continue in the direction of Triglav, Luknja, and Pogačnik hut on the broad road, going past the chapel on the right. This route is quite touristy since it is very wide. The hiking trail leads past the winter bivouac out of the forest and to a memorial of the fallen Partisan soldiers, then turns left for the Tominškova route up the hill. You will cross some steps and, after an hour and a half of a steep walk, reach a more scarce forest and the start of the secured climbing trail leading up to the northern walls of Begunjski vrh. The climbing helmet is a must! After three hours, the steep slope calms down and continues across Prag. After the stream that it crosses along the way, the path furthers towards Kredarica.

Hiking towards Triglavski dom (hut):

You will walk across Triglavski podi, where you should carefully orientate, especially in the case of fog. As the path steepens, the steel cables appear, and soon, you should arrive at Kredarica. To proceed to Mt Triglav peak, turn to the right and follow the trail along with the mountain saddle and the Triglav glacier. Soon the climb with wedges and steel cable will start. First, you will reach the top of Mali Triglav and lower yourself a bit down the path, continuing across the mountain ridge and again climbing up to Staničevo zavetišče. To finally reach the top, you will walk across a beautiful path with a panoramic view.

2) Aljaž Lodge in Vrata Valley – Mount Triglav (across Prag)

Altitude difference: 1849 m

Estimated hiking time: 6 h 10 min
Distance of path: 8.1 km

Access to the starting point:

Leave the Gorenjska highway at Hrušica and follow the main road to Kranjska Gora, then before Dovje, turn to Mojstrana. Take the road in the direction of Kot, Krma, and Vrata valleys, following the road to Vrata, ending on a parking space near the Aljaž lodge.

Route description from main parking at Vrata Valley:

Follow the macadam road and continue straight toward Triglav, Luknja,  along a wide path until you reach the first intersection. Bypass a chapel and head through the forest onto a hiking trail past the winter bivouac and the memorial for the Partisan soldiers.

Continue going through the woods, leading to the next intersection where you persist on the straight path uphill along the torrent riverbed and then go to the left across Prag, crossing the torrent. The trail reaches a steeper part, secured with the wedges, and guides us higher into a more difficult path. Beautiful views reveal there and the gravel scree sites appear, soon followed by another difficult steep slope secured with steel cables across Prag. After, you will have to climb up a vertical rocky terrain meeting with the Tominškova route.

Meeting Tolminškova route:

It becomes easier as you reach a creek. The route will guide you to another intersection, going toward Kredarica, with Stanič hut on the left, and continue across Triglavski podi. Make sure to orientate carefully here, especially in the fog. The path will become secured with steel cables soon, leading you to the Kredarica hut. Then you can continue to the Triglav glacier, up to the climbing trail across the peak of Mali Triglav, reaching the Aljaž tower on the top of Mt Triglav at last.

Estimated hiking time: 6 h 20 min
Distance of path: 8.2 km

Drive another 10,5 km, and you will be able to park on the left side of the road on a parking lot by the Triglavska Bistrica river.

Route description from Aljaz lodge:

Cross the river and head onto the hiking trail, going through the woods and not along the road of the Triglavska Bistrica. The road will merge with the route from Aljaž lodge and then go to the left along the marked path leading to the edge of the woods and the gravel pits. Continue up the ravines and bypass the dwarf pines and bushes, going left through the valley. After a steep climb up the scree, the route comes to the upper part of the Za Cmirom valley

On the right side of the northern side of Begunjski vrh, you can see a mountain saddle, following the trail that might be slightly less traced and completely disappears after 15 minutes. Follow the steep ravines to the saddle and then step on the marked path from Stanič lodge to Cmir, guiding you to the right to reach a steep ascent and then to Begunjska vratca. You will soon reach the lodge, and the path proceeds towards Kredarica, first crossing the Rži gravel screes, lowering, and then rising higher again. It will ultimately lead you from Kredarica peak and to Triglav lodge on Kredarica. Keep walking to Mali Triglav, across the glacier, and the ridge between Mali Triglav and your goal. You will arrive at Mt Triglav soon.

4) Aljaž Lodge in the Vrata Valley – Mount Triglav (across Plemenice)

Altitude difference: 1949 m

Estimated hiking time: 6 h 30 min
Distance of path: 7.6 km

Access to the starting point:

Leave the Gorenjska highway at Hrušica and follow the main road to Kranjska Gora, then before Dovje, turn to Mojstrana. Take the road in the direction of Kot, Krma, and Vrata valleys, following the road to Vrata, ending on a parking space near the Aljaž lodge.

Route description from Vrata Valley:

Follow the macadam road and continue toward Triglav, Luknja, and Pogačnik hut on a wide path until you reach the first crossroad. Bypass a chapel and head through the forest onto a hiking trail past the winter bivouac and the Partisan soldiers’ memorial. The route is at first the same as the route from the Aljaž lodge in the Vrata valley to Triglav (across Prag) that we described earlier. The route is the same as the intersection at the bivouac beneath Luknja after the meeting point with the Tominškova route.

Luknja:

Continue straight on the steeper path below Luknja and in the border with the Primorska region. A beautiful panoramic view of the mountains above the Soča valley opens up. Follow the saddle to the direction of Triglav to the left, where the paths leading on top of Bovški Gamsovec, Zadnjica, and Trenta meet. After, you have a challenging trail, secured with a steel cable, which can be climbed in a short amount of time but lacks a broader range of safety cables and wedges from here on while going above the abyss. Do not take this route unskilled, unprepared, or in bad weather conditions! Crossing this part, you will reach the ridge, following its path to new steel cables and wedges, leading up a steep rise and descent. The route here opens a view of the Sphinx, the steepest pillar of North Face of Mt Triglav.

After Sphinx:

The route will become lighter and guide you from the Glava v Zaplanji and Morbegna to the Western Triglav plateau. Proceed left across the gravel scree and enter the next part of the climbing path, which is still more accessible than the ones before, crossing the Triglavska škrbina and climbing up to the top of Triglav Mountain.

From Zadnjica Valley to Mount Triglav

Zadnjica Valley lies near the famed Trenta Valley on the Primorska side of the Julian Alps, within the majestic Triglav National Park. Located just east of the village of Trenta, this hidden valley welcomes visitors with some of the most dramatic mountain views in the Julian Alps. Towering peaks such as Pihavec, Kanjavec, Vršac, Ozebnik, and the mighty Triglav rise steeply above the valley like a natural fortress.

Due to its orientation, this is the shadier side of the park — giving it a wilder, more mysterious atmosphere. But it’s not just about the mountains. The nearby Soča River add even more charm to this alpine treasure.

To reach Zadnjica Valley from the Gorenjska region, you’ll cross the scenic Vršič Pass, or you can arrive from Italy via Predil Pass.

1) Zadnjica – Mount Triglav (across Dolič)

Altitude difference: 2214 m

Estimated hiking time: 7 h 15 min
Distance of path: 11.1 km

Access to the starting point:

Start from Kranjska Gora and drive across the Vršič mountain pass in the direction of Bovec, or vice versa, but only to the 50th serpentine of the Ruska cesta (Rusian roadway), in the vicinity of Trenta village. Take a sideway there leading a couple of 100 meters further to the parking lot. Enter deeper into the Triglav national park Slovenia.

Route description:

Follow the road past some houses and huts for about 15 minutes until an intersection at the old unofficial parking lot and continue on the path to the right towards a freight cable car that goes to Pogačnik lodge in the direction of Dolič. Proceed across the plains into the woods uphill and to the path’s end at an intersection. This is the Utro intersection, and you continue your route straight, where the road turns into a hiking trail and mule track, leading steeply across slopes and branches off into a climbing trail across Komar, and the trail where you will continue going straight along the wide path, reaching a viewpoint at another intersection. Take a right turn and keep walking toward the Dolič mountain hut. The route will become steeper here and go up the slopes south of the Zelenice mountain peak.

After Zelenice Mountain Peak:

Once the trail gets flatter, the path reaches a meeting point with the Komar route, but you keep walking on the mule track until the next intersection. Go to the right, and the path will lead you along the precipice toward the intersection near the Dolič hut. Continue to the left there, and after half an hour, you should reach a lighter path that does not grow in altitude, and the view of Mt Triglav will reveal itself. The path requires carefulness since the terrain is quite rough and leads to the meeting point with the Plemenice route later on. You will find yourself below the Triglavska škrbina, ascending up and heading to the left on the intersection with the path down to Planika.  Soon you will reach the secured steep slope that will gradually lead you to the top of Triglav mountain.

2) Zadnjica – Mount Triglav (across Plemenice)

Altitude difference: 2214 m

Estimated hiking time: 7 h 15 min
Distance of path: 11.1 km

Access to the starting point:

You can reach this route the same way as for the Zadnjica – Triglav (across Dolič) route.

Route description:

Follow the aforementioned mule track from the Utro intersection and continue walking Past the branching off of the Komar climbing track and going in the Luknja saddle direction. This is where the route becomes different from the one across Dolič. You need to follow the mule track to the east and across the steep slopes to the saddle. Coming to the intersection and taking the right turn to Triglav. The path leads to Bovški Gamsovec or straight down to Aljaž lodge in Vrata valley on the left.

From Luknja Saddle:

The route will become difficult here and starts to rise quickly, almost vertically going up along the steel cable. Once you climb past the first wall, the trail becomes slightly easier but. It soon turns into a dangerous slippery path above the precipice with little to no via Ferrata cables or wedges. This path requires preparation, and it’s not recommended if there is humidity and wetness in the air. The trail will then lead left to a ridge. Opening a view to the east, excelling another difficult part of this route with iron cables and wedges. From this point, you will be able to see the steepest pillar of Triglav, called Sphinx.

Form pillar Sphinx:

After that, proceed past the Glava v Zaplanji on the left and Morbegna straight ahead. Go across the Triglav western plateau up and across the gravel scree, entering the climbing trail. This one is much easier than the one going across Plemenice. After bypassing below the Triglavska škrbina, go up to the left and across the Triglav slope to the top peak.

From Kot Valley to Mount Triglav

If Kot Valley is your chosen starting point for a Triglav hike, prepare to be amazed — beauty awaits around every corner (fittingly, kot means “corner” in Slovenian). Just 3 kilometres from Mojstrana, a peaceful forest road leads you into this serene glacial valley.

The Triglav trail from Kot is shorter and moderately demanding, making it ideal for experienced hikers looking for a quieter approach. One of the highlights along the way is the scenic Lengarjev Rovt, a picturesque meadow nestled at 1,000 metres near the end of the valley. Higher up, you’ll be rewarded with breathtaking views of Rjavina, Vrbanova špica, and Luknja peč.

From here, you can reach the Stanič Hut in just about 4 hours. Curious about more routes and views this valley has in store? Keep reading to uncover the one Triglav hiking trail from Kot Valley.

Route description:

The path of this Triglav tour will lead you to a turning point then turn left across a torrent riverbed. It will guide you up through the woods and become steeper with time, as it will reach the part secured with wedges (only necessary when the trail gets slippery). Debeli kamen:

What follows is a dwarf pine area that becomes steeper and rocky, revealing a view of Debeli kamen (a big boulder at the end of the hill). Climbing up the gravel scree, you should reach an intersection.  Take a right turn there, continuing in the direction of Stanič hut and Rjavina. The steep slope will become easier and soon reach another intersection. The right path will lead you to Stanič hut, bypass the karst hole Pekel on the right side below and guide you upwards to the hut, revealing a beautiful view of Mt Triglav.

Follow the path that leads to Kredarica, under the Rž screes, and across them to the side ridge of Rž. The trail becomes secured there and descends to Kredarica. From there you should reach the edge of the Triglav glacier and the climbing trail starts. Secured by the wedges, going to the top of Mali Triglav and crossing the ridge to the top of Triglav.

First, make sure that you are prepared for the trail that you are about to take to the top of Mt Triglav, and prepare or rent the much-needed climbing gear. First aid in your backpack wouldn’t hurt as well. But if you come across misfortune, or perhaps someone somehow wearing flip flops and not being able to proceed climbing Triglav nor up nor down, have this number close by:

Our tour guide Jerry was awesome, funny and you could just see he knows what he is doing. We went to the canyon of Jermanka and even though there is a drop almost 45m high we felt extremely safe.
